As orthopaedic specialists, Dr. Harwin and Dr. Maher believe that a key part of their responsibility is to help each patient make his or her own informed decision about treatment options and whether or not to have joint replacement surgery.
When our surgeons do recommend surgery, it is only after nonsurgical options have been considered. Patients are shown educational materials, including anatomical models and brochures, to help them understand the surgical procedure and potential outcomes, including benefits, risks and alternatives.
Patients who elect to have surgery will take comfort in knowing they are in the hands of one of the most experienced orthopaedic surgeons in the nation. During his career, Dr. Harwin has performed over 12,000 total hip and knee replacement procedures. While new to the practice, Dr. Maher has gained extensive expertise and skill during his training at highly-respected institutions, including Mount Sinai Health System, NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital, and the Insall Scott Kelly Institute.

Total Knee Replacement
Total knee replacement is a common procedure used to treat knee arthritis. During this procedure, the damaged surfaces of the knee joint are replaced with prosthetic components that mimic the feel and motion of a natural knee. This can provide significant pain relief and improved knee function for patients. We also offer custom-designed gender-specific knee implants designed to conform closely to the differing bone profiles of male and female patients.
Total Hip Replacement
Total hip replacement is often recommended for patients with hip arthritis that has severely damaged the joint, limiting range of motion. During a total hip replacement, your surgeon replaces the damaged hip joint with prosthetic components, which helps to relieve pain and improve hip function.
Robotic Assisted Joint Replacement Surgery
Dr. Harwin and Dr. Maher also offer robotic-assisted hip and knee replacements using Mako™ Robotic-Arm technology. Mako™ Robotic-Arm technology offers many benefits over traditional surgical methods and can be helpful in restoring mobility for patients suffering from arthritis in the hip or knee that has not responded to nonsurgical treatments.
Anterior Hip Surgery
Dr. Harwin and Dr. Maher utilize minimally invasive approaches to hip replacement surgery, including the direct anterior and direct anterior-lateral approaches. With these approaches, the incision is made at the front or side of the hip, rather than the back. These approaches allow our surgeons to make smaller incisions and disturb fewer muscles and tendons, which may lead to quicker recovery.
Ceramic Hip Replacements
In addition to the traditional metal hip replacement implants, Dr. Harwin and Dr. Maher also use ceramic hip implants where appropriate. Ceramic hip replacement implants may be a better alternative for younger patients, as they may last longer than the metal hip replacement implants. Ceramic implants may last longer, helping to reduce the need for revision hip replacement in the future.
MDM® Hip Replacements
Dr. Harwin is always seeking to improve results for his patients, and has assisted in the design of joint replacement implants, including the MDM® (Modular Dual Mobility) system. Dr. Harwin and Dr. Maher use the MDM® hip replacement implants, which are designed to improve joint replacement stability, so that active patients can engage in recreational and sports activities.
